I develop programs and libraries for the desktop and UWP the information I will be providing also is useful when developing software for tablets, smart phones, and other devices. This is a more general definition and the one which I will be referring to in this post. A good API makes it easier to develop a computer program by providing all the building blocks, which are then put together by the programmer. In general terms, it is a set of clearly defined methods of communication between various software components. In computer programming, an Application Programming Interface ( API) is a set of subroutine definitions, protocols, and tools for building application software. But there is a second definition that is more wide-ranging as exemplified by the definition in the Application Programming Interface article on Wikipedia: This, and similar definitions, are used consistently when referring to client programs communicating with web servers over the Internet for example: RESTful web services. In other words, API is a kind of communication channel through which two separate programs can communicate with each other and share each others service and resources. For example, the following definition is provided by Gurpreet Singh in his blog titled What is API Documentation?:Īn API is a set of predefined rules and specifications that a software program can follow to use the services and resources provided by another software program. What is an API? API stands for Application Programming Interface, but what is that really? Looking at definitions on the Internet, you will often see references to one program using another program. 8/9/2023 0 Comments Git reset all local changesWithout this flag, git will only remove untracked files and not folders. If you have made a lot of new local changes and want to remove whole directories from your local changes you will need to add the -d flag. Here, the -d flag is used to include untracked directories and untracked files. If you want a completely clean slate and want to discard all your local, uncommitted changes (including files you may have just created), you can use git clean. How to discard local changes: untracked and new files Now can I revert all and go to state before this git reset HEAD Know someone who can answer Share a link to this question via email, Twitter, or Facebook. By symbolic reference, we mean that unlike a normal reference, it contains a pointer to another reference. To revert all changes made to your local working directory you can also use the git checkout command as follows: $ git checkout. git commit -m 'saving local changes before pulling' git pull origin incoming. One of the best definitions of HEAD comes from the Pro Git book: Usually the HEAD file is a symbolic reference to the branch you’re currently on. Git reset allows you to move the HEAD to a previous commit, undoing the changes between your starting state and specified commit. In the local toolbar of the File List, click, then select Revert (for selected files) or Project > Revert All (for all files in the project). Another option is to revert a branch to a previous commit by discarding all changes to all branch files since that commit. The default option is to revert the branch to a previous commit, but retain all the subsequent changes as uncommitted changes. : If you replace the part of the command with a period, git will discard all local unstaged changes from your local setup Git reset affects all files in all branch folders. This will undo any changes youve made to tracked files and restore deleted files: git reset HEAD -hard Second, remove new files. $ git restore : Replace with your relative file path to discard a single file.Git restore is used to discard untracked local changes. After running this command, you need to run the git checkout command to revert all the local changes as described in the last section. If you have local changes that you have not staged yet and want to get rid of completely, you can use two different commands. How to discard and undo local, uncommitted changes This guide looks at some of the most common use cases, including discarding changes to staged, unstaged, and untracked files. Undo changes after they’ve been staged with git add (but before you run git commit). you have not yet run git add to add or stage them). The study, unprecedented in both scope and timespan, presents a comprehensive analysis of data on animal bones discovered at dozens of prehistoric sites in and around Israel. The paper was published in the prestigious scientific journal Quaternary Science Reviews. Shai Meiri of the School of Zoology and Steinhardt Museum of Natural History, and Jacob Dembitzer, a research student of Prof. Alkow Department of Archaeology and Ancient Near Eastern Cultures, Prof. The researchers also claim that about 10,000 years ago, when animals larger than deer became extinct, humans began to domesticate plants and animals to supply their needs, and this may be why the agricultural revolution began in the Levant at precisely that time. In this way, according to the researchers, early humans repeatedly overhunted large animals to extinction (or until they became so rare that they disappeared from the archaeological record) and then went on to the next in size – improving their hunting technologies to meet the new challenge. The researchers claim that at any given time early humans preferred to hunt the largest animals available in their surroundings, which provided the greatest quantities of food in return for a unit of effort. Damage to the environment, however, was often irreversible".Ī groundbreaking study by researchers from Tel Aviv University tracks the development of early humans' hunting practices over the last 1.5 million years – as reflected in the animals they hunted and consumed. The researchers: "The study suggests that ever since the advent of humankind, humans have always ravaged their natural environment, but also found solutions for the problems they created. The researchers hypothesize that technological advancements throughout human evolution were driven by the need to hunt progressively smaller and faster animals. When only small animals remained in their environment, humans began to domesticate animals and developed agriculture. The study shows that humans always hunted the largest available animals until they became exceedingly rare or extinct, and then went on to target the next-largest.Image: Elephant hunting illustration view more 8/8/2023 0 Comments Gemini guys personalityThe fact he loves being in your company is a good sign. Rankings are based on popularity (as opposed to a simple listing that would grow unmanageable with that much content). And today it’s adding a new feature that makes it an even more viable iTunes competitor: support for podcasts.Ĭo-founder Monique Farantzos says that doubleTwist has built and integrated a podcast search engine with 20 times as many podcasts as iTunes offers. In October the company integrated an Amazon-powered MP3 store, allowing users to download and sync their music directly with any of hundreds of compatible devices, much as they would with the iTunes/iPod combo. Earlier this month Songbird, an open-source media player/browser hybrid landed a deal with Philips to come bundled with some of its MP3 player devices.Over the last six months, doubleTwist, the iTunes alternative that lets you manage your music, videos, and photos, has really been stepping up its game. We should also note that while it was previously known that doubleTwist would come preloaded on the Fender myTouch phone, the full extent of the partnership hadn’t been announced before now.ĭoubleTwist isn’t the only company looking to establish itself as a viable alternative to iTunes. Co-founder Monique Farantzos declined to comment on any specifics, but says that doubleTwist licensed its software to T-Mobile and that it’s a “significant source of revenue”. In any case, you can still download the fully featured version at. doubleTwist wouldn’t comment on why T-Mobile decided to omit the feature, but the company is planning to further expand the software, so hopefully it’s in the pipeline. The feature, which launched in October, allows users to purchase music from directly within doubleTwist, much as you would with iTunes. One downside to the T-Mobile version of doubleTwist is that it’s missing one of the app’s best features: integration with Amazon’s MP3 Store. If this proves to be successful for T-Mobile, it wouldn’t surprise me if doubleTwist was adopted by other carriers as well. It may not be quite as robust as iTunes, but it’s going to be good enough for most people. doubleTwist makes this much easier for new Android owners (it even shows you how to mount the SD card). There are plenty of applications out there meant to help you do this, but it’s a poor experience for users who are trying the platform out for the first time. Once that’s done, you may find yourself half-expecting iTunes to cheerily pop up to help transfer your media, but nothing happens - it’s up to you to drag and drop media from your computer to the appropriate folder on the phone. First, you have to manually mount the SD drive from the phone’s screen. One of the most jarring experiences when moving to an Android phone is figuring out how to sync media to the device. The software is impressive in its own right, but the company has also gotten quite a bit of attention because it was co-founded by DVD Jon, who serves as CTO. In effect, doubleTwist can serve as an “iTunes for Android”. You can drag and drop songs to playlists, sync music, photos, and video to your devices, and share your media with friends using integrated Facebook and Flickr support. And perhaps most important, doubleTwist will come pre-installed on some Android devices, including the new Fender/Eric Clapton myTouch 3G handset.įor those that haven’t used it before, doubleTwist is a media management program that’s both visually and functionally similar to iTunes in many respects, but with one big difference: it will work with nearly any device (iTunes only plays nice with iPods and iPhones). As part of the deal, T-Mobile will begin displaying doubleTwist banners in their retail stores and on. Tomorrow, the company will announce that it has forged a partnership with T-Mobile, which is now promoting it as the supported way to sync media to its line of Android phones. Big news for doubleTwist, the iTunes alternative that allows you to manage media for hundreds of devices, including Android phones, the Palm Pre, and BlackBerry. 8/8/2023 0 Comments Starrett protractorEven better, how do you determine the required miter angles for crown molding when it has to run around an oddly shaped room with unusual corner angles? Use a protractor, right? Wrong. Great, right? Well, how do you know if you need to cut a 45°, 46°, or even a 50° miter for a corner that may be a little out-of-square. Today, miter saws are more precise, miter gauges on some saws have 1° increments, we have laser cut readings, and micro-fine adjustment knobs so we can dial in an angle just right. Is your angle 90° or 45°? My saw doesn’t have a setting for 90° so it must be 45°, right? Fast forward to the present day While both could be great carpenters, they wouldn’t understand what or how the other was describing what the other needed. You could never take two guys that hadn’t worked together and put them on a job. Single cut, miter cut, 45°, 90° (are you talking about the actual angle of the corner or the ‘miter’ setting on the saw to cut a piece to fit that angle?)…. It was like each of us spoke a different language. Get two carpenters going about the problem of using a protractor with a miter saw and forget it! You may as well take the day off. Not knowing what miter you needed, a single cut or miter cut could be troublesome. If you weren’t cutting with the saw locked in a detent at 0° or 45° it was a real crapshoot. chop saw (with a broken or missing miter gauge, I might add) and do my darnedest to intersect my pencil marks through that little plastic viewfinder. I’d draw two parallel lines on either side of the scrap and go back to the monster Hitachi 15-in. Then I’d take scrap material and lay it on top of the final material intersecting the first piece. I can remember temporarily nailing fascia or trim in place, purposefully making it extra-long. If we thought an outside miter looked like it was 45°, we’d cut the first piece 22 1/2-we’d gamble to see if the next mate was going to look good at 22 1/2. Nope, back then, we’d cut a few scraps, then eyeball it, check it, go back and cut it again and again until the scraps looked good, and then we’d know the right miter angle and cut the final material. And we certainly didn’t have a small indestructible “idiot proof” gadget that told us the exact miter for a particular corner, so that when we cut our molding, or even our fascia for decks, the joinery would be perfect. No air-nailers, certainly no cordless drills, no portable table saws, no Festool. The 359, with its 360 scale and fine-adjust, is clearly "the one to have" if you are gonna use it for layout.Ī new question has arrisen with regard to these protractors: Why are the ends of the straightedge cut off at different angles ? One end is a 30 degree angle, and the other end is a 45.When I started building, 20-something years ago, we were lucky to have had a ‘chop saw’ on the job site. One is one the scale, the other is on the blank area, unless you are right at 0 or 180) (Only one vernier is useable at any time because of the 180 degree main scale. (They are adjustable with tiny screws) A strength of the 364 is that in some applications, you might have to stand on your head to read a 359 whereas a 364 will have the active vernier upright. The 359 has a 360 degree main scale, thus requiring only one vernier scale.Īn obvious drawback of the 364 is that both scales have to be correctly calibrated. This is necessary because the 364 has a 180 degree main scale. It's interesting to note that the 364 actually has TWO vernier scales, 180 degrees apart.
